Thank you so much for coming out to audition tonight for the staged readings of "8" in April and May. It was wonderful to see all of your talent!

As you may know, this process still has a long way to go before rehearsals start. We wanted to let you know that coordinating casting will take longer than typical undergraduate shows, and that it will most likely be around 2 weeks before we post the final cast list (both on this blog and throughout the community). Additionally, please be aware that there will most likely be double casting of roles for the two productions, and that there will be more spots for undergraduates in the May 8th reading. Lab Producer Platform

Good afternoon all! I would like to officially submit my letter of intent for a position on the producing director board for the 2012-2013 season. Coming around the final stretch into my senior year, it is my goal to take a leadership role in our theatre community. I have gotten to see first-hand how Lab! functions, from the conception of a show to the final product, as well as the many steps in between. I genuinely care about what our organization provides: student-driven, artistic collaboration. I understand the time and energy that is required of a PD, and I know that I would rise to the challenge in order to be part of a well-rounded, diverse team. As a producing director, I would continue to foster this sense of community and communal support that makes Lab! Theatre possible.

I would also encourage more spontaneous, short-term projects that would give students not involved in a current production the chance to continue practicing their art. I want Lab! to be constantly producing work and providing students with the opportunity to get creative and make daring choices when it comes to performance. I want to see more one-acts that rehearse for a week and do two shows, or student-written performance art piece that go up in the quad at noon on a Friday. Any student wishing to work on such a short-term show could apply to the producing directors for consultation on the piece.

My vision is for Lab! to consult two or three shows per semester. “Consultation” would include publicity for auditions and shows on the listerv, as well as on the Lab! Blog, along with contact with board members to provide help with technical deign. This would be a learning process and time to work for students who cannot commit to a full-length Main Stage or Lab!oratory show. Consultation would not include financial support. I think that having zero budget forces students to get creative, especially if they only have two weeks to put on a show. I think we should be finding innovative ways to produce as many performances as possible. Students should not feel like their ideas are lost simply because they were not selected for a Main Stage or Lab!oratory slot. As long as we reach out to people and let them know that there is another option, I think the student body will benefit extensively.

My Name is Chris McMahon, and I am running for Producing Director for LAB! Theatre. I have been heavily involved with LAB! for the past two years, ever since I came to UNC. I have acted, stage managed, written, and directed during my stay here and I have a blast doing all of it. So, some basic information about me: I’m a sophomore Physics and Philosophy Major, I was born in Florida, but came to NC when I was young. I’ve been doing theatre all my life and was so happy when I came to UNC to find such an active community to dive right into.

So what do I want to do for LAB!? I want help LAB! grow into an even greater company by helping improve the process for all of those involved. The first thing I would like to address is deadlines. I have worked for several other theatre companies in my day, but I’ve found that the ones who have the least stressed casts and crews tend to be the most successful. In my time at LAB! I have found that deadlines are not nearly what they could be. In my world, deadlines are concrete; they are solid and unmoving. If you have a proposal for a physics research, and it is due at midnight, you turn it in before midnight. Not a day afterwards, not an hour afterwards, or even a minute afterwards. If your proposal is not in the professors hand by midnight exactly, he won’t open it. He’ll delete it and never look at it, because he has better things to do. Missing deadlines is a problem in LAB! and it makes things very difficult on everyone. It makes 10/12s atrocious, directors crazy, and stresses people out far more than they ever need to be. I am looking forward into the future of this company and one thing I don’t see getting us there is a burned out tech staff and burned out actors. Meeting deadlines protects our people and makes it more attractive for people to join. I want LAB! to prosper and grow like it never has before, and I think that deadlines is a key way to doing that. As a Producing Director I would enforce deadlines and help make the process better for everyone.

Also thinking forward, I would like to improve communications with the rest of the campus. When I come to auditions with LAB! I see nearly the same group of people each time. This group of people has given us a fine stock of actors with which we’ve had many successful seasons, but I think that there are more people on campus with things to offer. Things like dramaturgs for those tricky Shakespeare’s, or scientists to help explain all those weird physics things they mention in shows, or just more actors for our shows. New people mean new ideas and new work being added to our company. I would like to involve as much of the campus as possible in every project. To enact this, I would employ aggressive recruiting techniques. Tables in the pit, posters, commercials, anything that we can do to get it known that we are producing work and that we want people involved.

Finally, I want to include as much transparency as possible to this company. A major complaint I’ve heard is that people have no idea what the board does and what the producers do behind closed doors. Now I understand that some of it is to streamline a process and confidentiality reasons, but I also believe that some of it is unnecessary. As a producing director I would try to keep my fellow LAB!ies as well informed as possible. You work with us, you deserve to know what we do.

So why should you vote for me? I think I’m up for the job and I think that I could bring something new and good to the table. I work hard and am willing to go to extraordinary lengths to help this company grow. LAB! is my new home, and I intend to make it as good as possible. Thank you for your consideration.

A. I intend to develop and reorganize the technical and design side of LAB! through the following measures:

SCHEDULING THAT WILL MAKE DESIGN, REHEARSALS, AND BUILD EFFICIENT

Everyone should know when builds are, when deadlines are, and who to ask for help. We don’t have a real technical production program here, but we should at least expose people to a technical process more similar to the professional model. Furthermore, if people see efficiency and regularity in these programs, they will be more likely to donate time and even dabble in something they might not ordinarily notice.

MORE VISIBILITY & EXPERIENCE FOR NEW & INEXPERIENCED DESIGNERS

We all started from somewhere, so let’s give students new to the theater world the opportunity to try it out in a low pressure and low judgment environment. We are, after all, a learning company. Let’s find ways to get new blood into the Kenan.

MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR TECH PRODUCTION AND ACTING TO INTERMINGLE

Though the professional model often separates the two fields, I believe that as an undergraduate program at a liberal arts university, we should embrace an interdisciplinary understanding of theater. To help out with builds as an actor should not be an annoyance, but rather an opportunity. The same goes for the designer interacting with the director and cast of actors. We should create more opportunities for people from both sides to work together. There has been suggestion of a one-act festival that incorporates design as well, and I think that is a perfect way for everyone to get a taste of how relationships work between directors, designers, and actors. Workshops may also be helpful for this.

B. I want to open up communication with the resources we have in our own building.

We have people in the CDA that know things and want to teach them to us. Let’s use them! Sometimes they are even willing to give us things.

C. I intend to gain a greater campus presence by pursuing interdisciplinary relationships with other campus arts/service groups. This goal may take a backseat to my more foundational concerns, but it is something to consider.

Dear LAB! Community,

I would like to officially submit my intent to run for a position as a Producing Director for the 2012-2013 LAB! season. After careful consideration, I believe that as a Producer on the LAB! Board next year, I will bring a sense of continuity and experience to our process of playmaking, a foundational and positive relationship with faculty and staff, and a driven passion and energy for all the work that we do. Over my three years at Carolina, I have contributed to the work that we do here at LAB!, and in the DDA in a multitude of capacities across all different disciplines, and each experience has given me insight into the workings of a theatre company and how we can strive for even greater work in the future. I’ve experienced the unique challenges and benefits inherent in the structuring of production teams, from board operating to set construction to stage management. As an actor on stage and as the Community Outreach Director I have experienced the more educational and creative aspects that make our work truly fulfilling. It is because I enjoyed all of these experiences so much that I chose to run for a position as a Producing Director last year, and after a year of learning, testing new ideas and pushing the envelope with fellow board members and the community, I would be honored to fill that role again.

As a Producer, I would encourage the implementation of several new and developing initiatives. I would foster our newly revised constitution (if said constitution passes with your vote) to bring a greatly needed sense of clarity to our production process and the work accomplished on the LAB! Board. By defining the opportunities and roles for everyone in our community, we as Producers could harbor a new degree of communication between the board, production teams, and actors as well as faculty and staff all across our building. In addition to this, I believe that we as a community could also benefit from more collaboration between different organizations both in the building and around campus. As a production assistant for “The Parchman Hour” this year as well as a collaborator on the staged reading of “8”, I have seen the willingness and availability of members of the PATP program as well as PlayMakers staff to assist and engage with us as undergraduates. I believe that making pathways of communication that are easily accessible between our community and those around us would be hugely beneficial, and as a producer, I would work extensively to establishing those pathways.

Beyond why I believe that my experiences would make me an excellent candidate for this position, there is a more important element to my intent which I must address and that is this: I truly love the LAB! Theatre. Throughout college, the most fulfilling and rewarding experiences I have had have been with the people and the works of our organization. The LAB! has a uniquely passionate and supportive group of collaborators who are incredibly self-motivated and reliable, and it has truly been, and I hope will continue to be, an honor to work with all of you in this capacity.

What makes a good producer? In my mind, a good producer is someone who is dedicated to creating good theatre. Someone who wants to work with directors and designers to put on shows that are inviting and exciting and different. These are shows that consume you, in a way that makes you think about them and talk about them—so other people can experience something extraordinary.

I want LAB! to continue to produce amazing shows. This will happen only if we work on ways to make LAB! a stronger theatre company. Something we need to do is enhance our technical theatre. Lighting, sound and set give depth to shows. We need to have a tool-qual at the beginning of the year that gets publicized to students and is mandatory for the board. Casts should be encouraged to attend builds and work with the crew—get an appreciation for the stage they stand on. When more people show up to builds there is a more positive environment, and we’re more likely to get new students in the CDA. We should offer pizza or snacks to anyone who works through the afternoon. We also need to have more apprentices during shows! Every designer should train at least one or two assistants during the run. We should never feel like we’re putting too much pressure on the same designers simply because there is no one else around to do the job.

LAB! should always be working to expand its walls. I want to work on finding alternative venues for shows, especially outdoors when the weather is nice. This promotes innovation, and makes us more visible to the outside world. It would also help to relieve the constant struggle for CDA classroom space. We also need to reach out to other student groups on campus. If we produce a show that has religious themes, we should get a Christian group on campus to come in for a talk-back, or even a debate. It would be awesome if we could get Classics students or faculty in to discuss The Bacchae. We should pursue interdepartmental projects as well. We shouldn’t worry about LAB! getting too diffuse. We will always have a core group of individuals dedicated to LAB! But we should encourage other people to drop in—who have different skills and beliefs and can contribute in different ways. Our doors should always be open.

When I was a freshman, I didn’t understand what a producer did. I didn’t understand that undergraduates could be given such responsibility. I thought that the title was ceremonial. I’ve learned that our producers are essential. They schedule readings. They sit in on rehearsals. They make calls to the Student Union and the Dental School and the Women’s Health Clinic to get permission to put a car in the pit or obtain false teeth or diaphragms. They talk to McKay Coble about how LAB! is run. They go knocking on doors. I’m ready to do all this, because as someone who has worked on so many productions, I believe we deserve the best shows possible. We shouldn’t compromise on what we love.

Auditions for JULIUS CAESAR

Hello all! Hope you're ready for this semester's first round of auditions. JULIUS CAESAR, directed by our very own Josh Wolonick, will be holding auditions next Tuesday and Wednesday, the 17th and 18th of January, respectively. Bring a one- to two-minute classical monologue, and a schedule so we can start planning rehearsals. Don't forget to sign up on the call board in the CDA hallway - auditions will be taking place from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm each night.

And here follows a note from director Josh Wolonick:

Actors,

Julius Caesar was Shakespeare's first great tragedy, the play he wrote right before Hamlet. It is the story of the conspiracy to kill Julius Caesar and the civil war that followed. The question is raised, how best do we rule a city? A nation? Who is the best ruler? The man of cold reason and logic? The soldier? The shrewd manipulator? The handsome young orator who can sway the opinions of a nation with a speech? Shakespeare is ambiguous: there is no right answer. What he was clear about is that the question is difficult and constant, and so, we are going to ask it. The play is fast, bloody, funny, gorgeously written, and confounding. WE will produce the play as Shakespeare wrote it, as if we were playing on the Globe Stage in 1599, representing the assassination of 44 BC that rocked Western civilization for centuries. And most importantly, we will be an ensemble. We will cast around 14 actors to play 45 roes. That means most actors will have several characters to work with.

Men and women are welcome to audition for all roles. Yes, we are gender bending, and any person may be cast in any role.

With a month between auditions and rehearsals beginning, we'll have lots of time to dig into the text before we get into the room. If you're working on another play during that interval, I can meet with you during the day, on weekends, on your time. During the interval, the cast will get together to break bread and get to know and trust one another.

My goal is this: LAB!'s production of Julius Caesar will be a big, collaborative project. We'll play in the room with improvisations, physical theatre exercises, games, and with the words of a man who makes me proud to speak English. We will support each other and Shakespeare's text will support us. And it's going to be fun.

Hello all,

first off, please read this note from Scott:

"Fellow Artists!

As I said several times last night, I’ve never had so much fun during an audition process. Thank you all for your enthusiasm, courage, and generosity.

I’ve also never had such a difficult time assembling a cast list. Grace, Melissa, Zach and I have spent over two hours trying to figure out this complex puzzle. Simply put, we just don’t have enough roles to accommodate the number of wonderful people we saw in Room 101 over the last three days.

Have we come up with the perfect solution? I doubt it. Theatre is life. Which means it’s a journey. And it’s never finished. And it’s not perfect. But let’s remember that we are all part of a community dedicated to learning. And the best way to learn is to make mistakes – as painful as that can sometimes be.

Please join me in celebrating the joy we all shared during the audition process – and the fulfillment of having learned about each other, about ourselves, and about our beautiful craft.

For those of you not listed below, I hope you will still consider taking part in this process. We need as many optimistic artists as the CDA will hold.

"The Milford Project" Auditions

The Department of Dramatic Art's Spring East-Coast Premiere Musical, "The Milford Project", is holding open auditions for all registered students Monday December 5th from 7:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M. and Tuesday December 6th from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M. Callbacks will be on Wednesday December 7th from 6:00 P.M. to 10:00 P.M.

Please sign up for an audition time on the callboard outside the Center for Dramatic Art's room 105. Auditions will take place in room 101.

In preparing for your audition, please follow these guidelines:

"First, what I'm looking for: courageous, compassionate, and considerate collaborators.

Next, the style of this piece: sort of in the flavor of commedia dell'arte. The characters are simultaneously unrealistic (HUGE) and truthful. For guidance in this regard, look at the masterful performance by Ellen Green in the film Little Shop of Horrors. Stunning. The aim is to make these characters as big as possible, without sacrificing truthfulness.

Finally, the audition criteria: you will prepare an original piece, no longer than one minute:

1. take an aspect of yourself (characteristic) and expand it to epic proportions
2. write a piece -- in which you try to get something from someone else (objective/tactic) -- which includes singing. In other words, at some point you should break into song. The melody need not be original, but the lyrics should be. Remember, you are portraying yourself -- a huge version of yourself.

When you audition, you will instruct your partner (who will be provided for you) re: the given circumstances. So you might say, "You're my dad and you're really crazy about your car." Then you will play your piece. In this case, for example, you might write a piece about really needing to use your dad's car -- because it's the only way you're going to get _____________ to go out with you. While you're trying to break your dad's resistance, you eventually burst into song.

That's just an example. Your idea will be way better then mine.

I don't want to say much more, because part of the audition process is about you creating. (i.e. It should be FUN.)"

Milford Project Interest Meeting

Come and learn about auditioning for the Department of Dramatic Art's newest main stage production premiering this spring "The Milford Project"!

The interest meeting for the production will take place Wednesday, November 30th at 8:30 P.M. in Union room 2518A-B

Last seen at the L.A. Fringe Festival, "The Milford Project" is set in 1937 Iowa, though little attempt at historical accuracy shall be made. MILFORD tells the story of Richie, a thirteen-year-old science prodigy who attracts the attention of the US government with his research into the properties of the atom. Richie is secretly conscripted to construct a superweapon America can use to in the coming war… because no one ever suspects the child. This musical comedy is written by Kevin Oeser and Nick Martin, and is directed by Playmakers actor and professor Scott Ripley.

This is the time to share your concerns about the department and make it a place that is most beneficial to you!

In 1967, award-winning British playwright Joe Orton, was bludgeoned to death by his love and fellow writer, Kenneth Halliwell. Halliwell's justification? 'If you read his diary all will be explained'. Diary of a Somebody, created entirely from excerpts of Orton's real-life diaries, is a fast-paced, multi-roling, dark comedy tracking the final months of Orton's life and loves, productivity and promiscuity.

UNC student Sam Smith's original play Stick Up Kids is the story of two best friends trying to make it on their own in New York City. They're pursuing the American dream like everyone else but doing it their own way--they hope to get rich by mugging people. The Bacchae tells the tale of a god scorned who thrusts his wrath upon Thebes. This reimagining of a classic Greek tragedy, set in the modern techno scene, is a representation of the war within all of us. Director Chris McMahon shows the violent embrace of chaos and order, and the art that springs forth from such conflict. Blending traditional and physical theatre techniques, this production explores power, gender, and freedom.

LAB! Hours with Gate Theatre

Don't miss LAB! Hours next Friday November 4th with the exceptional Gate Theatre Dublin.

Ireland's illustrious Gate Theatre started the acting careers of Orson Welles, James Mason and Michael Gambon (Dumbledore!) and enjoyed a close association with the late Harold Pinter, and became the first company in the world to present a full retrospective of the 19 stage plays of Samuel Beckett - a towering figure in 20th century theatre and one of the great Irish humourists. And they're coming to hang out with us!

They'll tell us all about what it's like to work in the company and have some Q&A time. There will also be information provided about a new performing arts study abroad opportunity in Ireland.

This is a very unique opportunity to interact with these artists, presented by Carolina Performing Arts, so don't miss it! See you there at 3pm in Room 104 of the Center for Dramatic Art. Get there a little early to make sure you get in.

Do you like making collages? Do you enjoy Art Galleries? Do you have a strong sense of aesthetics? We are looking for one or two students to design the Ken Strong Gallery.

What is the Ken Strong Gallery, you ask?

In 2006, Ken Strong, beloved PRC actor and DDA professor, met with a few undergraduate students and decided to create an Undergraduate Gallery, much like the Playmakers Gallery, to showcase the history of Undergraduate production at UNC and highlight recent and upcoming performances. The Gallery would provide information about the department to those outside of the community and allow UNC Undergraduates to take pride in their heritage.

Are you as excited for the first LAB! show of the season as we are? We hope so.

SIC, by Melissa James Gibson, directed by Meghan Modafferi, examines the plight of post college graduates: those funny in-between years after college, before "real life" begins. The dialogue is written entirely without punctuation and takes place in various in-between locations like apartment hallways and overheard from an air shaft. Theo, a composer commissioned to write music for a theme park, Babette, a writer with a unique theory on history and Frank, a gay man who spends his time practicing tongue twisters in preparation of attending a vocational workshop in auctioneering are all neighbors in a New York apartment building, trying to figure out how to reach their own potential.

Audition for An Ensemble Devised Mask Piece!

Auditions for LAB!oratory's Mask and Physical Theatre Piece will be SEPT 6TH and 7TH WITH CALLBACKS ON THE 8TH, from 6:00-10:00!

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

-Auditions will consist of a warm-up, a short training session, and an improvisation. NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. A sense of play and attention to the group is all that is required! Don't sweat it!
-You NEED NOT prepare a monologue or text for this audition.
-Auditions will occur in small groups. Please allow 15-20 minutes for your audition.
-Please wear movement-appropriate clothing. Anyone dressed in restrictive clothing will not be permitted to audition, but will be allowed to change audition times provided they return with appropriate attire.

will be posted the night of the 4th on the CDA call board. Because this is a group audition, it is important to sign up in advance to ensure you have a space and group.

Director Jess Adams spent the summer traveling across the US and to Paris to study with physical theatre groups at Double Edge Theatre, Teatro Punto, and the Dell Arte Institute whose work falls into the traditions of Grotowski, Lecoq, Commedia dell'Arte, and other methods of physical theatre, mask work , and mask construction.

This project seeks to find an application and a fusion for this study by bringing together actors interested in physical ensemble work to create a piece that comes from the desires of the whole. Over the four week process, ensemble members will explore mask and physical theatre disciplines, while also working with imagery that speaks to them as an artist. The work will be personal, physically rigorous, self-revealing, and ultimately honest. Bring your yoga pants, and bring an openness to the work and the ensemble. What will be, will be.

'The Rimers of Eldritch,' directed by Tyler Burt

A story which follows the citizens of Eldritch, a Midwest coalmining town
suffering a slow economic death. Their quiet life is interrupted by a sensational murder trial, and the revelation of something dark about the town.

Where: Auditions will take place in the Center for Dramatic Art.

When: Tuesday, August 30th and Wednesday, August 31st from 6 until 10pm. With callbacks on Thursday, September 1st. Sign up for an audition slot on the callboard (the bulletin board in the Center for Dramatic Art between room 104 and 105).

Three Days of Rain

OPENING TONIGHT,

Join New York's Ground Up Productions and LAB! Theatre for "Three Days of Rain" by Richard Greenberg!

The show will be at the Kenan Theatre Friday, August 26th at 8 pm, Saturday August 27th at 8 pm, and Sunday August 28th at 2pm and 8 pm. It's free for students and faculty and $10 general admission.

Three Days of Rain explores a broken family haunted by the memories of a distant father. As the play progresses, it reaches back in time to the 1960s and we are offered all the information needed to devise an alternative reading of the sad, unexpectedly romantic family story.

The show is produced through the annual collaboration of New York's Ground Up Productions and the DDA. Ground Up is a professional theatre company founded by UNC grads that is dedicated to giving back to their alma mater. They come to UNC every year for a residency, which includes the production of this show, as well as a week of workshops and master classes for students with the company members.

DDA Kickoff!

Hey everyone! We hope you had a WONDERFUL time at Fall Fest! We loved meeting all of you and hope we get to see you again at the Dramatic Art Department Kickoff!

The Kickoff is this upcoming Friday at 5 pm in the Kenan Theatre in the Center for Dramatic Art (right behind Cobb dorm). We'll talk about the season, introduce you to some members of the group, and tell you about the oh-so-many ways you can be involved with LAB! Theatre and the Department of Dramatic Art!

After the Kickoff, there is a gala where you can meet your fellow theatre-lovers over some snacks and drinks!

After THAT, you should stay and see "Three Days of Rain" at 8 pm presented by LAB! in conjunction with New York City's Ground Up Productions!

"Three Days of Rain" will play all weekend- Friday at 8 pm, Saturday at 8 pm, and Sunday at 2 pm and 8 pm. Tickets are free for students, so you have no excuse not to go!

The intrepid cast and crew of "Three Days of Rain" and some Ground Up company members trekked from New York to Chapel Hill today and are hard at work teching the show!

Hey all you Labbies out there! Getting excited for the start of the semester? WE ARE!

Be sure to visit our table at Fall Fest on Sunday night! Also come to the DDA Kickoff Friday August 26th at 5 pm in the Kenan Theatre! After the Kickoff you can come to opening night of.... drum roll please.... THREE DAYS OF RAIN!

So for those of you who haven't heard, we are in the midst of our annual collaboration with New York's Ground Up Productions! Ground Up is a professional theatre company made up of UNC grads who are dedicated to giving back to their alma mater... US! This process includes a show (Three Days of Rain) co-produced by LAB! and Ground Up. The Ground Up company members will also be leading awesome workshops for us the first week of class! This week, the cast of Three Days of Rain is in New York City rehearsing the show, taking classes with Ground Up, and having Ye Grande Olde Time in the city!

Monday we had a mask workshop with our very own Jess Adams and Ground Up's Dan Wheeless.

Tuesday Guy Olivieri, Seth Shelden and Sarah Berk took us on a tour of important theatre-y places in the city! We visited the Actors Equity Building, the Drama Bookshop, and other useful places to know. We also ate at the all-important, ever-amazing Shake Shack!

Wednesday, Guy Olivieri taught us "The Business" of making it as a theatre artist in the city. Check out his workshop, y'all! He is very informative and helpful!

Today we are doing an audition masterclass with Matt Murphy, who graduated the MFA program at UNC in 2010!

And... of course... LOTS AND LOTS OF REHEARSALS!
We are traipsing back to Chapel Hill on Sunday to go into tech the first week of class and then... opening night Friday August 26th at 8 pm! (Stick around after the Kickoff!)

The first LAB!oratory production, directed by Meghan Modafferi and written by Melissa James Gibson, examines the plight of post college graduates: those funny in-between years after college, before "real life" begins. The dialogue is written entirely without punctuation and takes place in various in-between locations like apartment hallways and overheard from an air shaft. Theo, a composer commissioned to write music for a theme park, Babette, a writer with a unique theory on history and Frank, a gay man who spends his time practicing tongue twisters in preparation of attending a vocational workshop in auctioneering are all neighbors in a New York apartment building, trying to figure out how to reach their own potential.

Where The Ocean Meets The Sky is a student-written work penned by our own Pat Robinson. Winner of last year’s Selden prize for playwriting, this one-act piece takes a harsh look into another reality, where two wanderers seek Paradise in a post-apocalyptic desert that used to be Earth. The play will be co-directed by Pete Bell and Pat Robinson.

In addition to the shows above, we've reserved two LAB!oratory slots in the Spring semester that we're going to fill based on proposals we receive during the Fall semester. Auditioning right at the top of the year, The Rimers of Eldritch, written by Lanford Wilson and directed by Tyler Burt, is a 1966 play about a dying coal mining town in mid-20th century Missouri and the people who still live there. It’s a non-linear story which follows the residents of Eldritch, Missouri over the course of one year, culminating in a murder trial and the revelation of a great evil within the town.

How I Learned to Drive

How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel is the story of Lil' Bit, a Maryland girl growing up in a complicated family. Her relationship with her troubled Uncle Peck in particular shapes the way she grows into a woman. As an adult she must confront her issues with her family, especially with Uncle Peck.

Written by Tony Award winning playwright Wendy Wasserstein and directed by Stephanie Linas, Uncommon Women and Others is about a group of friends in their final year of college trying to figure out their own definitions of identity. The play questions the roles of femininity, education, friendship as the young women approach the exciting and terrifying void of graduating college. Set in a series of flashbacks, the women reminisce about how their college experience shaped them and how they have or have not lived to their own expectations of themselves.

Stick Up Kids

UNC student Sam Smith's original play Stick Up Kids is the story of two best friends trying to make it on their own in New York City. They're pursuing the American dream like everyone else but doing it their own way-- they hope to get rich by mugging people. Getting a reservation at an elite New York restaurant becomes their symbol for "making it".

The Milford Project

Set in 1937 Iowa, though little attempt at historical accuracy shall be made, MILFORD tells the story of Richie, a thirteen-year-old science prodigy who attracts the attention of the US government with his research into the properties of the atom. Richie is secretly conscripted to construct a superweapon America can use to in the coming war… because no one ever suspects the child. This musical comedy is written by Kevin Oeser and Nick Martin and directed by Scott Ripley, and this production of it will be the East Coast Premiere.

Julius Caesar

William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar needs very little in the way of introduction: it’s an immortal story that still stands today as one of the greatest political dramas of all time. Under director Josh Wolonick, this production will be a semester-long process, which will take an in depth look at the political context of the piece, with supplementary readings and discussions going on before the rehearsals start. (You’ll still be able to do other shows in the Spring, though!)

The staged reading of Camus' "Caligula" will be directed by Tyler Burt.
"The Collective" is written by senior Catya McMullen and directed by junior Jess Adams.

What if our memories were controlled by a collective of beings—not quite human, not quite machine-- who fed us our remembrances with a little machine every time we craved a one, when we needed one , or when we should simply remember for our own good? In the world of Catya McMullen’s The Collective, Franklin Pomegranate Finch III is being interrogated for a procedural mishap in doing just that: being the custodian of therapist Jude Finkelstein’s memories. As a memory guide, Finch walks us back through a web of relationships and events to explain himself and his actions. We see one of Jude's therapy sessions with a neurotic young woman named Frankie, Finch's own conversations with a fellow memory guide and wannabe gangster named Abraham Persimmons Chakinsky, and Jude’s memories of a romantic relationship with a man named Mike who follows the ways of the Jedi as his spiritual path. The play deals with the power of collective experience and memory, how we live with the memories we have, and what happens when a professional trying to do her job begins to relate to her patient on a disturbing and perception-altering level. With a healthy dose of humor and powerful look at trauma, love, neuroses, growing up, the merits of Jedi spiritual philosophy, and goldfish racing, there’s something in The Collective for everyone.

GROUND UP IS LOOKING FOR PLAY SUBMISSIONS!

Hello UNC Drama enthusiasts!

I know it seems like we were just there, but believe it or not, first semester is almost over and Ground UP Productions (the people who brought you Letter From Algeria and a series of master classes this past August) is already starting to think about its 2011 residency down in Chapel Hill, now called the UnderGround Project.

This year, to make it more your program, we want YOU to pick the play that we produce at the beginning of August. We are currently accepting suggestions of plays that you would like to see done at UNC. If it is a published script, you can submit the name of the play/playwright to Catya McMullen at catya@groundupproductions.org and we'll go out and buy it and read it. If it's an original piece, you can just email it to Catya at the same address.

Here are a couple of guidelines to get you started:

· In terms of casting, the piece can have no more than four characters who are college aged. If there are other characters, they have to be in their mid 20s-30s.

· The play must be flexible in terms of space (meaning it can be performed in a big or a small space).

That's it! Please send us your submissions NO LATER than January 15th. We will be announcing the chosen script by the end of January, so that you can have all of February and March to prepare for auditions at the end of March.

Hi everyone! My name is Courtney Buley and I am looking for an Assistant Stage Manager and a couple of Stage Hands to help me with a project I am working on as Stage Manager. I graduated last year with a minor in theater production so I may know some of you already! The show is the HearNC Music Video Festival December 2nd at the Cat's Cradle. We would do one run through on Sunday, 11/28 with another pre-show run through the day of the show. I know you are all very busy with your own schedules but any help would be so great! Please call or email by Wednesday, 11/24 (Friday, 11/26 at the latest!) to let me know if you are interested! Below are portions of the press release for the show so you can get a better idea of what you'll be working on!

The premiere of the Laboratory's show "Thom Pain" will be this Thursday, November 18 at 8:00 pm in the Bingham Blackbox!
It is a play written by Will Eno, directed by Doug Harris and starring...well...who do you think?
Thom is sticking around for performances Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 8:00pm,
with a 2:00 matinee on Sunday, and a 5:00 show on Monday!

Lab! T-shirts are in! Swing by Lab! Hours on Friday from 3 - 5 and pick yours up...we have extras!!
The cost is $7 each, payable by cash or check made out to Lab!Theatre

Kungfu Masterclass with the Shaolin Monks

Join us for a special Kungfu masterclass with the monks from the Shaolin Temple this Thursday, November 11, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Gerrard Hall.

Visiting UNC for this week's performances of Sutra as part of the Carolina Performing Arts season, the monks come directly from the original Shaolin Temple – China’s key national Buddhist temple that was established in 495 AD by monks originating from India. The Shaolin monks follow a strict Buddhist doctrine and include Kungfu and tai chi martial arts in their daily regimen.

The monks will give a brief introduction to Shaolin Kungfu and history of the temple, teach a set of beginner Kungfu moves and at the end answer questions.

No experience in the martial arts is necessary to participate.

The class is free of charge, but space will be limited, so we recommend you arrive early in order to guarantee a spot.

STAN Has Updates!

First, The "Playing for Time" Project directed by Greg Kable opens this Thursday, November 4 in the Kenan Theatre at the Center for Dramatic Art.
"Playing for Time" was written by Arthur Miller, and it is based on the memoirs of Holocaust survivor and French musician, Fania Fenelon.
The show runs Thursday through Sunday at 8pm and Monday at 5pm. There is also a matinee at 2pm on Sunday.
Admission is FREE, so there's no reason not to come out and support the work of fellow Lab!ies and drama students in this moving piece!

"Under Construction" written by Charles Mee and directed by Jeb Brinkley will hold auditions Tuesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 10 from 6 - 10pm CDA 103.
Callbacks will be on the 11th.

For the audition, please come prepared with 30-60 seconds of a memorized text that you personally identify with and that could be assoiciated with the vast landscape of American culture.
This text can and should come from literally ANYWHERE (magazine articles, advertisements, radio transcripts, novels, peoms, phone books, movies, etc).
Be creative and find a text that means something to you. Also, come prepared to move. We might break a little sweat, so be ready with an open heart and mind to listen and collaborate with each other!

"Metamorphoses" written by Mary Zimmerman and directed by Lee Storrow will hold auditions Tuesday, November 9 and Wednesday, Novemer 10 from 6 - 10pm in CDA 105.

Based on Ovid's transformation myths, the play subtly mixes the ancient stories of pathos and tragedy with contemporary language, humor, and thought.

Volunteer with Kidzu for Halloween! Actors Needed!

Want to get dressed up and spook unsuspecting patrons for a good cause? Sounds like fun right?

Kidzu Children's Museum on E. Franklin Street is putting together a Haunted House to benefit Kidzu for the 4-5 days before Halloween, and they need our support!
They have a great space donated on West Franklin Street and a Haunted House Director/Organizer with a ton of experience working pro bono.
If you’re interested in being actors in the Haunted House or helping to set up spooky scenes, this is a great opportunity to get involved around town!
The dates/times of the House would be 8:00pm-11:00pm Tuesday-Sunday, with the potential of staying open until midnight on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

"Grenadine" is Happenin'!

What: A Table Read of "Grenadine" by Neil Wechsler
When: Friday, October 15th in LAB! Hours (3:00 - 5:00 pm)
Where: CDA Room 104

Guest director and recent alum Erin Hanehan will be hosting a table reading
of "Grenadine" by Neil Wechsler October 15th from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Slated to
be produced this spring in the LAB!oratory, "Grenadine" is the story of one
man's journey to find love and redemption. The play was named as the winner
of the 2008 Yale Drama Series competition, overseen by playwright Edward
Albee.

The reading will be an open session in which anyone is welcome to read
and/or observe. Parts will be assigned upon arrival. 8 actors are needed
(preferably 5 females and 3 males). Following the reading, which shouldn't
last longer than 90 minutes, participants will be asked to discuss the
piece in terms of literary merit and production values.

"Grenadine" is an engaging selection that would offer a unique opportunity

Calling All Zombies! Yes, Zombies!

High Strung Violins and Guitars is shooting a no-budget promo video for our upcoming Halloween event Bookulele IV. We're looking for zombies and I thought there might be some of them among you or folks you know.
We'll be "shooting" on a super high tech flip camera on Sunday October 3rd from 3:00PM til 5PM. We'll meet at our shop at 1116 Broad Street in Durham and do some shooting on surrounding streets and finish up shooting at Pinhook downtown. More info and more specific cast needs follow:

MAKEUP/COSTUME: We will have some stage blood and very basic makeup available, but are hoping folks like yourselves will be able to arrive in their own makeup and costuming. Zombies in various kinds of street clothes is the basic aim.

THE PAYOFF: This is literally no budget so unfortunately there's no monetary compensation, but you'll be supporting an awesome locally owned music business. Plus you'll have my love and devotion, the chance to romp around Durham as a brain eating zombie, and will live eternally on the interwebs!

MALE LEAD ZOMBIE: We are also looking for a lead male zombie and a couple of additional zombies who would need to be available to shoot from 10AM until Noon this Friday October 1st as well as the Sunday call time. If you think you've got the time and the stuff, let me know.

GOT A KID?: Finally we're looking for an adorable little girl (age 5 to 8) available both this Friday (10/1) from 10AM til Noon as well as the Sunday shoot, who's not shy and brave enough to be slowly pursued by a band of brain-hungry zombies.

Hello Everyone! I am Charlotte Mertens the DDA/LAB! UGP Associate Producing
Director and I'm spearheading our LAB!oratory season this year.

This email is to inform all of you that the LAB!oratory accepting show
proposals on a rolling basis for this semester and next.

This is an awesome opportunity to get back to the basics of theater.
LAB!oratory is process focused as opposed to production focused. A lot of
what we do in the DDA/LAB! UGP leans heavily towards production and this is
fabulous, but what LAB!oratory allows us to do is to work outside the
traditional box. LAB!oratory shows work more with actors, they approach
texts in new and creative ways, they explore experimentation--hence the
origin of our name LAB! theater--. LAB!oratory is flexible enough to be
whatever you want to be, and also has the advantage of allowing for a more
creative schedule for the rehearsal process.

Though we are limited for time this semester, we may be able to do a show
as early as this October--but if that seems like a stretch we're also
accepting proposals into the year. The sooner we get a proposal the more
likely your show is to be produced!

Classes are offered by Virginia Queen, acting instructor and actor working in the triangle as well as New York City.

1102.: ACTING ON-CAMERA
Students will become both creatively and technically comfortable while acting in front of the camera. Students will be exposed to a variety of on-camera acting techniques and will apply those skills to improv, exercises and scenes. They will explore different on-camera genres including film, episodic television and commercials. Students will learn about the framing of different shots, as well as important technical aspects including hitting your mark and physical and emotional continuity. The main focus of the class will be on the minimalistic style of film acting, the importance of listening and reacting, and the challenges actors face in finding truthful organic behavior in front of the camera.

1101.: THE ACTOR’S CRAFT
Students will express their creativity and imagination while exploring basic acting fundamentals. This class uses scene-study and related exercises to develop each actor’s ability to listen, live in the moment and trust one’s instincts. Through the acting techniques of Stanislavsky and Meisner, students will explore analyzing text and approaching a role while focus is placed on each actor’s ability to empathize with the character’s impulses and intentions. The class will begin with Image Theatre and a series of sensory and muscular exercises and games based on the works of Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed. This exploration will strengthen sensory awareness and set a foundation to begin learning acting techniques. The Department of Dramatic Arts KickOff is this Friday, August 27 from 5:00 - 7:00pm in the Elizabeth Price Kenan Theatre.
Following presentations in the Kenan, appetizers will be served in the lobby for a chance to mingle and get to know new and returning Lab! Theatre members!

At 8:00 this Friday night, Ground Up Productions will be presenting Michael I. Walker's "Letter from Algeria" right inside the Kenan Theatre! Admission is FREE to all UNC students, so come out and support Sarah Berk, Bryan Burton, Jerry Sipp, and Josh Wolonick in this exciting workshop premier!
